Hattie Lockhart Smith
Hello and welcome, thank you for finding me!
Art has always played an important role in my life and has been a constant through both the good and bad times. I am a big believer in the health and social benefits that participating in art can have, from creating a simple doodle to developing your skills in a class.
I currently live in West Sussex in Shoreham by Sea with my partner Neil and our lurcher Poppy. This means we are very lucky to be able to enjoy the beautiful South Downs, the sea and the bright lights of Brighton!
I create colourful abstract wall art inspired by the environment around me. Working in acrylic paint, monoprint, collage and stitch I create multi-layered pieces that reflect the shapes, energy and history of the land we occupy.
I like to work with a limited palette of four colours and white on wooden panels, I try not to put my work behind glass, varnishing it instead, as I like the work to be able to be touched.
I initially studied ceramics and textiles at Manchester Polytechnic – back in the olden days! Since then I have developed a love of combining printing and painting with an occasional textiles element.
I studied printing with the Open College of Arts to fit around family and work, where I progressed with collagraph and monoprint techniques and more recently completed an MA in Inclusive Arts Practice.
For several years I taught art to adults in the rehabilitation department of a military charity, which meant my own practice began to get forgotten.
Having recently turned 50 I have taken the plunge and am focusing on persuing my dream of being an artist, I’m not sure where this will take me but I’m looking forward to finding out!
